This week I want to talk about a very serious issue affecting our generation and college students. Each year more cases are being reported by colleges and universities concerning mental health issues, attempted suicides, and student deaths. There are many resources to help students struggling with mental health. Please let me preface the rest of this post by ensuring you are not alone.
Some departments which can help students if they would like to receive counseling include the health and wellness center and counseling services. These resources are free to all students through your tuition. I know at my school, in particular, appointments for the entire semester filled up in the first two weeks of classes. This just shows how many students need support for their mental health. Therefore, if you are concerned about your mental health then follow-up with these resources. Either way, if you need help, seek it out on campus and they will get you to the resources that can help you. Taking care of your mental health is just as important as taking care of your physical health.
There are also many clubs and organizations around every college campus trying to bring awareness and offer resources for mental health. One common theme each of these organizations and campus departments advocate for is students practicing self-care. When students’ mental health is being affected their school work or jobs will also be impacted, but more importantly, the student’s health could become a concern especially if prolonged and not addressed. Therefore, self-care can help reduce levels of stress, anxiety, depression, etc. that can prevent their overall health from becoming a concern. Examples of self-care can include but are not limited to, going for a walk, journaling, watching a movie, writing three positive statements each day, or working on a hobby. Doing self-care for just thirty minutes a day can make a drastic difference. Apps like “Calm” can help provide an escape through guided meditations if that is something you enjoy doing for the sake of your mental health. Self-care leads to self-confidence which leads to a healthier happier life.
I have found in my life, journalizing keeps me in a better mindset. Many people only journal when they feel bad, but it is important to write about the good days too. The reason being, when you have a bad day, you can go back and look at what kept you on the positive track before going through a troubling time.
For students who may need help when classes are not in session, there are resources available. Please take a look at some community resources that are listed below.
